New Type of Matter Created

Collisions of protons and lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider have unexpectedly created a new state of exotic matter called a color-glass condensate, a liquid-like wave of gluons that may result from the phenomenon of quantum entanglement.

Heavier and Faster Electrons

Scientists have shown that electrons in certain crystalline substances can behave as if they were a thousand times more massive due to a phenomenon known as quantum entanglement, while at the same time retaining their superconducting properties when cooled.

Moving Mirrors Create Light

Physicists have developed a method of drawing light from an empty vacuum by causing tiny superconducting mirrors to "wiggle" at around 5% the speed of light, collecting virtual photons into a light source and confirming a basic tenet of quantum mechanics.

Quantum States in Bird's Eyes

In a process known as the radical pair (RP) mechanism, bird's eyes are thought to detect changes in quantum-entangled electron pairs separated by light and altered by Earth's magnetic field, allowing them to orient themselves by exploiting this phenomenon of long-lived quantum states.

Three-Body Problem Solved

A team of physicists has constructed a stable model of Borromean rings using three lithium atoms bound together, providing experimental proof to the solution of the three-body problem proposed mathematically in 1970.
